Earning Their Trust: Farrier Andy Painter

When Andy Painter was a kid growing up in South Carolina, he dreamed of being a cowboy. He spent time working on ranches and learning the rhythms of life around horses. He didn’t know it then, but that childhood dream would shape a lifelong calling — one built on trust, patience and care.

Fast forward to today, and Andy has been a farrier for more than 20 years. Instead of rounding up cattle or riding across open plains, he spends his days working one-on-one with horses — tending to their feet, easing their anxieties, and ensuring they stand strong. “Even though I don’t ride anymore, I still get to play cowboy all day,” he says.

Andy was recently recognized as a special caregiver through the Boehringer Ingelheim Share the Care program, which celebrates everyday caregivers who help keep horses happy and healthy. More than 300 nominations from across the country have been submitted.

Andy was nominated by Stephanie Melton, Administrative Assistant of The Sanctuary at Red Bell Run, in Columbus, North Carolina. Twice a week, rain or shine, he can be found at The Sanctuary. It’s a special place — a refuge for horses with medical, behavioral or age-related challenges. And for the last two years, Andy has made it his mission to make sure every horse, donkey and pony there stays comfortable and healthy.

“He is an extraordinary caregiver, because he treats every one of our special-needs equines like they are his own,” explains Stephanie. “Andy's skill as a farrier is matched by his kindness. Whether he’s working with our biggest draft horse or kneeling down to trim the hooves of our dwarf miniature horse, Andy is patient, gentle and calm.”

That quiet confidence has earned Andy something that can’t be bought: the trust of the animals he serves. “That’s the best part of the job,” he asserts. “When a horse that’s been nervous starts to relax, when they realize you’re there to help — that’s when you know you’ve done your work right.”

“We are so proud to recognize Andy as part of the Share the Care program,” says Sarah Happel, U.S. Head of Marketing, Equine, for Boehringer Ingelheim. “He exemplifies the spirit of the program with his dedication to the horses in his care.”

According to Stephanie, it’s not just Andy’s work with the horses that matters. “He always arrives with a smile and a laugh, ready to help, and his positive attitude brightens everyone’s day — both the animals and the people here at The Sanctuary.”

From draft horses to donkeys, from rescues to retirees, Andy’s hands-on care ensures every animal gets the attention they deserve. His work might not make headlines, but for the horses who depend on him, it makes all the difference in the world.

Because for Andy Painter, sharing the care isn’t just part of the job — it’s who he is.

About The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary at Red Bell Run works with several rescues across the United States to take in equines that are considered un-adoptable or need end-of-life care. Included among the equids sanctuaried at Red Bell Run are miniature hinnies, donkeys and ponies, as well as their larger brethren from horses to draft mules and even mammoth donkeys. Each is considered as an individual, and their care is overseen by knowledgeable staff veterinarians and Andy.
